Ohio is very close to having a 2015 vote on an amendment to legalize marijuana in the state. ResponsibleOhio marijuana legalization initiative is projecting over 200,000 signatures by the end of the week. Ian James of ResponsibleOhio is quoted as saying:
“We have over 160,000 signatures. By the end of this week, we’ll have over 200,000.”
“We are shooting for over 700,000 signatures”
“On a weekly basis we’re getting anywhere from 4,200 to 5,600 new voter registrations and we’re turning those in to all the boards of elections”
ResponsibleOhio is backed by “big money” investors who have put up a total of $40 million for the marijuana legalization effort. The initiative has garnered controversy over it’s investor owned 10 grow sites that would be granted to exclusive commercial cultivation rights.
The well funded and managed operation is reported to have 500 workers with individuals paid to collect signatures.
“This is going from the tie-dyed to the suit and tie approach for marijuana legalization.”
Looks like ResponsibleOhio is on track to get their initiative on the ballot for 2015 in Ohio. The only remaining question will be how some of the rural districts from which they must collect signatures respond to being cut out of any commercial cultivation opportunities that may come with legalization.
